How To Access the New Crawl Stats Report in Search Console

Quick Vids, Videos 16th Dec 2020

(This is the transcript from our new video so it may not read as well as a normal blog post would)

Hi, Joe, here. I’m SEO Manager at Koozai and today we are going to look at how to find the new crawl stats report in Google search console. Now, if you are a regular user of search console, you may remember that’s in, back when the search console was called webmaster tools, there was a crawl stats report available. When Google was switched over to the search console nine, this was available under the legacy tools and reports section. This has now gone and the crawl stats report has moved to under the settings part of the tool. So if you want to access the crawl stats, just log into search console, navigate to settings, and then click on, or you can report, next to crawl stats. And then from here, you’ll be able to get all sorts of data about how your site is being crawled. Now, this is really useful data. It’s much richer than what we had before. There’s all sorts of information that we didn’t have, such as what type of response codes are being crawled the most, file types, and which Googlebots are crawling the most. But is this a replacement for server log file analysis? Maybe not. And the reason is because number one, at the moment, we only have crawl data from the first of November. And number two, this is of course only Google data. So it’s only these Googlebots that we have information on. This won’t include any information on Bing or any other crawls that might be visiting your website. So some really useful information here, but we’ll see exactly how useful it is going forwards. And yeah, that’s how you access the report.

If you can’t find Joe at the gym or at his favourite restaurant, the chances are he’s binge-watching Black Mirror on Netflix. His claim to fame is being interviewed on BBC radio about public toilets, but we reckon he’d rather be interviewed about his favourite destination – Las Vegas. With Canada and Japan on the travel bucket list, identifying as a sloth means he best get a move on!
