Video Guide: Social Media Explained

Social Media, Videos 28th Sep 2011

Hi. My name is Andrew, and I’m a digital marketing executive at Koozai. Today’s video is about social media, what is it and how can you use it for your business.

First off, what is social media? Well, it can be broadly grouped into a couple of categories. First off, collaborative projects. These include sites, such as Wikipedia, where people come together to maintain and build content and basically distribute it amongst each other.

Next, blogs. Basically, individuals or businesses posting content online about themselves, posting messages about products or things that are happening internally. This is a great way of someone to create lots of unique content about their business over time.

Next, content communities. These include sites, such as YouTube, where people produce videos or MP3s and people upload and sharing content, commenting on new content, and distributing it to other people within their different networks.

Finally, social networks. This is probably the most famous of all the categories. This include sites such as Twitter or Facebook. These are sites where individuals come together to form communities based on common interests or external social groups, people commenting on content, and just interacting with one another.

So, that is what is social media. But how can you use this to help promote your business online?

Well, just some initial areas that I would address if I was looking to promote my own business online, first off would be optimisation. This is how is your own website optimised for social media? The most simple form of this is including things like Facebook or Twitter buttons, which allow people to distribute your content quite quickly. So, if someone is on your website and they read a good piece of content and they want to distribute it to other people that they know, they just click on the link, and it’s easily distributed to other people.

Next off, blogging. As we mentioned before, this is a great way to create lots of unique content. Lots of unique content out there is going to help you be more visible in search engines, but it also helps you create a character for your company and helps people get more insight into the business. It’s also a great way of promoting any news items about your business.

And then finally, networking. This involves you being involved on those social networks that we spoke about. Does your company have a Facebook page or a Twitter profile? These also are great ways to allow you to communicate and interact with your current customers but also potential new ones. They’re really popular, people know about them, and there are lots of people online, so I would definitely recommend any business looking to promote themselves in the world of social media to ensure they have a Twitter profile and a Facebook page and start interacting.

Well, that’s been social media explained. For more information, visit our YouTube channel or visit our website at Koozai.com. We also offer services as a social media agency.
