Weapons and Mass Shootings

The Washington Post

About the piece

There’s no denying that there is a gun violence epidemic in America at the moment. But how do you break the narrative and get people to take notice of the main facts?

Using stats collated by Mother Jones, The Washington Post created a visual representation of the problem. It displays the number of guns legally purchased and illegally acquired, along with those that can’t be traced.

The interactive did what many articles had been lacking: it made an impact but it also made the huge figures related to gun crime and violence easy to digest.

The guns are shown in great detail and information is given about the crime they were used to commit. By including guns that were legally obtained, it shows that the issue doesn’t relate just to those that acquired a weapon though illegal means; any licence holder can carry these acts out too.
