Social bookmarking can send a lot of traffic to any site. If you do it correctly then you can see a huge increase in visitors. Sites like Stumbleupon, Digg and Reddit can turn into a valuable source of visitors.
The trick is getting your content onto the front page of these types of sites, however a lot depends on you making the right submissions and ensuring the correct information is in place.
Success can also lead to your site and pages receiving new incoming links.
Here we have some areas to think about when submitting to bookmarking sites to help work towards improved traffic.
Use Killer Titles
If your title doesn’t stand out then the chances are your page largely will go unseen.
You need to create a title that will grab the attention of your audience.
Titles that include a call to action or a “how to” element always catch the eye.
Write A Stand Out Description
When submitting; make sure the description you include backs up your title and will help to grab and then hold their attention.
Keep the description to the point and be promotional of your content. Make people want to read what you have submitted. However don’t make it too long. Not many people are looking to read a long review as well as the article itself.
Content Is Always King
At the end of the day if the content isn’t interesting then the chances are it won’t be voted on or recommended to other readers and members within the communities.
Write something worthwhile and interesting to your audience.
If it’s good then you will receive good feedback and more exposure.
Know When To Submit
Submitting your content is important but it is also just as important to know when to submit.
The time you make your submission can be crucial to the type of exposure you receive.
If you submit at a time when a majority of your market are asleep then you won’t receive much exposure at all. Again submitting out of office hours can also be detrimental as most people will be online during these hours.
Try for yourself and see what times and days work best for you and try to time your submissions around your findings.
Submit To The Most Relevant Category
When you submit, submit to the right category. If you don’t then you will lose your target audience.
Also make sure that you don’t try to submit to additional categories to try and gain extra traffic. It won’t work. Remember you are not only submitting to bookmarking sites but you are also submitting to communities.
Build Up Your Profile
This point is so important: It’s not enough that you have a profile on any social bookmarking site. You need to build up your profile. The better your profile is, the more chance your content has of being noticed by others.
A profile that only includes submissions from one source will stand out like a sore thumb.
Become an active user of any site you join. Bookmark other pages of interest. Comment on other submissions, join in. Become part of the community. If you only submit your own material you also have less chance of attracting contacts within the community.
Help Your Readers Bookmark Your Pages
Although you are going to submit your content to social bookmarking sites, it’s still very important to make it as easy as possible for others to do so.
The more variation you receive on your submissions the more chance you have of driving more traffic to your site. It also highlights that a wide range of people have liked your content.
Be sure to include bookmarking buttons on your pages or blog posts which will allow readers to bookmark easier.
So having said that you should actively participate in these communities, which sites are the most beneficial to you in bringing traffic to your site?
1 – Stumbleupon
Google PR: 8
This is the site I receive the best returns from.
However building up a strong profile does require work and time. The good news is that you can do this as and when you have a spare few minutes.
To actively take part in this community simply stumble content you like and build up your profile. A healthy mixture of submitting new content and stumbling existing pages will show that you’re actively involved. Also be sure to leave reviews.
The bigger your profile the more chance you have of seeing your content get picked up and stumbled.
This site can send a huge amount of traffic your way if done correctly.
2 – Digg
Digg is famous for being able to send a huge amount of traffic if you can get your story or content on their front page. Stories used to be banded about involving sites being unable to cope with the amount of traffic Digg could send.
Nowadays things have calmed down a bit and the site has changed but Digg is still a major player and any submissions that are included on the front page will send you a lot of traffic.
The only downside is that you really do have to build up your profile. Just being a member here won’t cut it. You really do need to get involved. Follow active users, comment on what they Digg. Do this and they are more likely to follow you back.
Like Stumbleupon, don’t just submit your own content. Find other quality content and submit it.
3 – Reddit
Google PR: 8
Reddit is another strong bookmarking site that can send a huge amount of traffic to your site.
Like Digg it’s good to be on the front page but appearing well within a category will also send you traffic.

Delicious is all about the information you add.
Good titles, descriptions and using the right tags are what will make your submissions a success.
Content can be searched for within Delicious so make sure you use tags truly relevant to you.
And of course make friends. Follow other users and bookmark their content. The more friends you have the more chance you have of getting your content out there.
5 – Technorati
Google PR: 8
Technorati allows you to link your profile to your blog. This will then give you the chance to have your content featured.
Again the authority of your profile can play a part in just how much content gets exposed to a wider audience.

Unlike 08 numbers, 03 numbers cost the same to call as geographic landline numbers (starting 01 and 02), even from a mobile phone. They are also normally included in your inclusive call minutes. Please note we may record some calls.
