Twitter Places may be altered to allow local businesses to claim their location on the social networking site's maps.
While the move has not yet been confirmed by the website, a spokesman said Twitter Places is currently experimenting with a variety of features and "allowing businesses to claim a Place is a natural thing to consider for the future", reports Search Engine Land.
At the moment, the only tagged location on Twitter is the website's own headquarters in San Francisco.
If it does go ahead with the change, Twitter will be following in the footsteps of Facebook and Google in offering location-based services to local businesses.
Twitter Places was launched earlier this year and gave users of the service the opportunity to tag their tweets with specific locations.
The facility makes it possible for visitors to the site to click on a specific location and view which recent tweets have been made at and about a particular spot.
