Marketing managers are being told that the spread of smartphones such as the iPhone and the BlackBerry means social networks can be used "virtually anywhere".

Smartphones 'Make Social Media Networks Ubiquitous' Jennifer Jacobsen, director of public relations at Retrevo.com – a consumer electronics review and shopping website – suggested that applications like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace are no longer a deskbound concept thanks to internet technology incorporated into mobile devices.

She indicated that such was the expansion of social media via smartphones, it had opened up new avenues in emerging markets, where people might not have been able to afford a laptop or desktop computer before – a point that may interest marketing managers, including those who use professional SEO services.

However, the expert warned of the addictive nature of social networking through a handset, because of its availability to customers.

Mobile vendor Sony Ericsson has already announced its intention to extend its roaming data charge to satisfy heavy demand for access to such sites.
