It is important for retailers to be aware of new technology and know how to embrace it.
That is according to Andy Mulcahy, communications executive for the Interactive Media in Retail Group, who says it is important to incorporate these developments into their shopping experiences.
It may mean businesses seek out SEO services as a way of making themselves more visible online, or perhaps use other forms of internet marketing to stand out from the crowd.
Mr Mulcahy explains: "People are really good in this country at adapting to technology, certainly a lot faster than retailers are able to keep up with."
Consumers are already behaving in a more tech-savvy manner, so it is down to the retail industry to understand this and get on board with the movement, he adds.
His comments follow a report from Cisco, which found there is a strong interest in "mashops" in the UK, which combine online and physical shopping experiences.
