There are a number of different ways companies can be successful in attracting hits to their website through relevant links.
Writing for Search Engine Watch, columnist Jennifer Van Iderstyne explained that many link building campaigns focus on direct link building – matching up content about the same topic.
She explained that one potential problem with this is linking to the websites of competitors and advised that online companies can be more lateral in their thinking.
This could involve link building to geographically relevant websites, such as a local business, or by sending traffic to a site that is likely to interest customers.
"It's not that hard to draw conclusions about the kinds of information and products your users want and then find ways to connect with websites offering exactly that," advised Ms Van Iderstyne.
Earlier this month, Gareth Owen, another commentator for Search Engine Watch, explained that effective link building can aid SEO by improving a company's position in search engine rankings.
