The recession caused a surge in people heading online to do their shopping and the trend is continuing even after the downturn.

Recession 'Boosted Appeal of Online Retailing' According to Richard Stables, chief executive officer of Kelkoo, the coming years will see UK online retail sales grow.

He claims this year "will see online sales achieving a significant share of retail trade in the UK, with 12 pence in every £1 expected to be spent online".

Businesses that want to capitalise on this prediction may be wise to take out SEO services to ensure they stand out from their rivals.

Mr Stables spoke after the results of a report commissioned by Kelkoo and carried out by the Centre for Retail Research – an independent group since 1997 – were revealed.

Findings showed online retailing to be one of the country's fastest-growing markets and revealed the sector rose by 16 per cent to be worth £44 billion last year.
