Consumer confidence in the security of online shopping means the market is enjoying a "sharp upward trend", according to SecureTrading.
Jon Prideaux, deputy chief executive of SecureTrading, said retailers of all sizes have invested in systems that allow for fast and safe payments, order fulfilment and quick delivery.
He stated that there have been a "unique set of dynamics" helping to push up online sales during 2010.
"Consumers want to save money by taking advantage of the many bargains on offer, get Christmas organised early, beat the VAT rise and save time," Mr Prideaux explained, adding that online shopping can help to meet all of these requirements.
His comments follow similar remarks made by Tracy North, a spokeswoman for price comparison site Kelkoo, who said consumers will be going on to the internet in an attempt to purchase big-ticket items in the next few weeks before the VAT rise takes effect in January.
