The online display advertising market has increased by 34 per cent in size in the UK, new statistics have shown.
According to research from comScore, the figures for the third quarter of 2010 were substantially above those recorded in the same period last year, with more than 220 billion display ads being seen by users in the three months.
Mike Read, senior vice president and managing director of comScore Europe, said: "A key driver of this growth is the retail sector, which increased over 300 per cent in terms of impressions delivered since last year."
He forecast that this increase will continue in the run-up to Christmas as consumers go online to search for gifts.
Facebook was the best performing site for display ads, with 31.1 per cent of the commercials being shown on the social network.
According to recent research from Boston Consulting Group, the internet is worth an annual £100 billion to the British economy.
