Inbound links have a large part to play in where a website will rank in search engine results.
This is according to Econsultancy blogger Kevin Gibbons, who stated that link building is highly influential when the likes of Google are assessing the value of websites to internet users.
"How often other relevant websites talk about a site and, crucially, link to it, is a far better way for an algorithm to determine which pages are going to be useful to searchers," he said.
Mr Gibbons added that the best way to encourage inbound links is through the creation of informative and relevant content that generates plenty of interest from internet users.
He suggested that setting up a blog could be one good way to achieve this.
Last month, Search Engine Watch columnist Gareth Owen explained that link profiles should be actively managed to ensure that only high-quality links are employed.
