Businesses looking to run successful SEO campaigns have been advised of the importance of conducting keyword research.
According to Search Engine Land columnist Chris Silver Smith, a large number of companies planning to use SEO services do not properly consider this aspect of running a campaign before they get started.
He said that many entrepreneurs feel they know what phrases people will be using to find their type of company, but this is often not the case.
"This is one area where making assumptions can eliminate two-thirds of your potential customers in one fell swoop," Mr Silver Smith warned.
"Alternatively, conducting a little upfront keyword research can expand your business."
The expert explained that the goal of such preparatory work is to identify the most popular terms people will be searching for that are linked to the website's business.
Last month, the importance of thinking laterally when deciding on what keywords to employ was highlighted by Stephen Spencer, another commentator for Search Engine Land.

Good stuff. It reminds me of people that get so locked in on what “they think and like” that it blinds them to the FACT of what the reality really is. It definitely starts with good keyword & consumer research, as well as the optimization of them both.
