Google is beta testing a new type of interest-based advertising, the company has announced.
Dan Friedman, a member of the Inside AdWords team, explained to users of professional SEO services that work is still being carried out on updates to its interest category marketing offering but Google expects advertisers will soon be able to use the service in their campaigns.
The system works by splitting users into various demographics and targeting them with ads that are most relevant to their interests, like sports or gardening products, for example.
"To help you better reach your customers … we're adding some new categories that will enable you to show ads that relate to demographic categories, such as age and gender," Mr Friedman explained.
Earlier this week, Google published an updated version of its SEO Starter Guide, complete with new tips on how to best optimise a website for users of mobile devices.
