Businesses with Facebook Fan Pages have been advised that they will eventually be merged with the social networking site's newly-launched Places application.
Users of SEO services who employ Facebook as part of their online marketing efforts were told by Search Engine Land's contributing editor Greg Sterling that its Places application is fairly similar to the tool of the same name operated by Google.
But he predicted that the arrival of Facebook Places may force Google to add a more social element to its Places application in future.
Mr Sterling revealed he had spoken with a Facebook official who told him the site has already created Places pages for many local businesses.
"Facebook Places will replace Facebook Fan Pages for local businesses once a business has claimed its Facebook Place page," he said.
The service is currently only available in the US, but the social networking site has said it expects to roll it out to other countries in the near future.
