Facebook Places has become available to UK users following its recent launch in the US.

Facebook Places Makes UK Entrance The service allows users to publish their location on a map which their friends can view via the social networking site.

Michael Sharon, product manager for Facebook Places, told the Guardian: "This is really the beginning in terms of how we start to weave location into out everyday lives."

Users of SEO services will be keen to try and take advantage of the application's potential, especially as a recent Ofcom study found 45 per cent of internet browsing time on mobile phones takes place on Facebook.

Last month, Justin Cooke, chairman of the British Interactive Media Association, described Facebook Places as a "marketer's dream".

He said the service was the next step for online marketing, allowing companies to connect targeted advertising and pay per click campaigns with the knowledge of where a potential consumer is located.
