It essential for small businesses to have outside links to their website if they want to increase its credibility, it has been claimed.

Credible Links 'May Improve Google Rankings' Writing for the Sydney Morning Herald, David Wilson explained that although many people often think "the more links the merrier", calibre also counts.

He advised that if firms want to improve their Google ranking, they could use SEO marketing services to include "classy" links from sites that search engines respect.

To get these links, Mr Wilson suggested enterprises "partner with a marketing association and a charity. That gives you muscle and an ethical aura".

He also said that it is important to promote a website using social media channels such as Facebook, LinkedIn and, in particular, Twitter.

Last week, Yahoo! stated on its Search Marketing Blog that both internal and external links are required if a business hopes to boost the "findability" of its website.

Marketers should promote these external connections using business cards and online local listings pages.
