Figures from comScore show that automotive manufacturers gained the largest proportional search audience in March.

Car Sites Gain Ground in March Over the course of the month, websites in the category gained almost a quarter (23 per cent) from their February audience.

While this means an increased search audience overall, it could also make SEO services more important for manufacturers looking to ensure that they achieve a greater share of clicks through from results pages.

The research is based on the US audience, with political sites and healthcare categories also gaining due to government activity on medical reform.

Jack Flanagan, executive vice-president of comScore Media Metrix, says: "Auto manufacturers relied on incentives and promotions to boost sales before the end of the quarter, sending more Americans to research their purchases online prior to buying."

Across Europe, comScore recently reported strong uptake of mobile mapping services, with the UK leading the trend at an 86 per cent increase in users in the year to February.
