An SEO expert has explained how "pingbacks" can be an effective method of driving online traffic.
Writing for the Australian SME website Smart Company, Chris Thomas said that the technique involves creating links that occur automatically when one blog post links to another.
To take advantage of this link building strategy, which is also known as using "trackbacks", businesses must first set up a blog platform that supports the technique.
Mr Thomas explained that firms can use Google to search manually for relevant blogs and then link them to their own post.
"If their post is old and has some PageRank, your post will inherit some authority quite quickly and have more chance of ranking highly," he stated.
According to the expert, pingbacks are a relatively simply way of adding value to a company blog and driving traffic without resorting to "spam techniques".
In a blog for CompilaTalk, industry expert Harvey Raybould recently urged businesses to avoid "black hat marketing" and take an honest approach to building up links.
