Yesterday's Mega Monday event resulted in the busiest online shopping minute of the year, it has been revealed.
According to e-retail organisation IMRG, at 13:15 GMT on December 6th 2010, a total of £815,000 was spent on the internet by British consumers.
The body added early figures indicate sales for Mega Monday were 21 per cent higher than those recorded on the same day in 2009.
David Smith, managing director at IMRG, said: "With over half the population of the UK now shopping online, this Christmas looks to be a big one for retailers, possibly even exceeding our estimation of £6.4 billion spent online in December."
Earlier this month, the executive said he expects 2010 to end up being recorded as a bumper year for web-based companies.
He predicted that while many consumers will be attempting to spread the cost of Christmas due to the current economic climate, they will still be spending plenty on gifts for their loved ones.
