Captions containing information about a web page have an important role to play in driving site traffic, an expert from Bing has explained.
Mark Johnson, senior programme manager for captions at the company, explained that the summaries contain information such as the URL, meta description and page content.
He told users of SEO services that captions allow websites to communicate what is on their pages, giving users help with deciding what page they want to click on.
"Captions are an oft-forgotten tool of the SEO toolkit," Mr Johnson said.
"Ranking is certainly the most important factor in determining user clicks, but captions are also a contributor."
Earlier this month, Search Engine Watch commentator John Greer explained that keywords should be contained in URLs, meta descriptions and page titles.
He said this will help websites to get a higher search engine ranking from the likes of Google and Bing, meaning more traffic should be recorded by online companies.
