Last night Channel 4 aired a Dispatches based around fake profiles, fans and click farming, naming and shaming companies and celebrities as they went. While this is hardly ground breaking news from the ‘award winning investigative current affairs programme’, it seems a huge number of us are still being duped on a daily basis.
Something big is following me. A swirling mass casts a shadow on the periphery of my vision. It has tens – no – hundreds of thousands of people caught in its irresistible gravity. It’s growing constantly, swallowing more, and more, and more, snowballing, ballooning, until it is bloated and stretched, warped and distorted from its original form. The rules no longer apply to it.
Have you ever watched an advert, which suddenly ends with ‘Like us on Facebook’, or ‘Follow us on Twitter’? Did you suddenly get out your phone, tablet or laptop to do exactly that? I didn’t think so. Why? Because there was no incentive or strategy behind its inclusion.
I had a science kit when I was quite a bit smaller and I never really made the most of the magic it contained. I couldn’t get enough of watching what would happen to a pile of iron filings when a magnet was close by. That’s the image I muster when picturing how using the right keyword can attract searchers. It’s just a case of finding the right magnet or keyword.
The internet is amazing. One of humankind’s greatest collective achievements, enough said. Shame it’s full to the brim with utterly useless rubbish. The best thing about the internet is also the worst thing. Anyone can use it to do anything they want.
At the beginning of June, YouTube rolled out its new One Channel Design which is designed to carry across your channel branding and design on all different user devices. Channel art is now shown the same on iOS, Android and TV apps. There are also other benefits to channel publishers such as the ability to show a ‘trailer’ video to everyone who visits your channel that isn’t subscribed, plus showing off your videos and playlists is also a lot clearer on the channel.
