Trouble Brewing for Facebook as Audience Figures Slip
Earlier this week it was announced that the dominant market share that Facebook enjoys within social media has dropped to a two year low. Whilst the 50.14% figure announced by Hitwise is certainly not a disaster, it is part of a growing list of concerns for the once imperious network.Market share is a notoriously difficult figure to accurately gauge. A drop may happen for any number reasons and not necessarily because of a reduction in actual visitors. In fact, the drop in overall share is more likely to be caused by larger increases elsewhere, with sites like Twitter and YouTube gobbling up visitors due to coverage of major events (such as the hacking scandal). The introduction of Google+ certainly won’t have done much to help either.

How to Engage with Social Media Properly
Social Media wasn’t something that ever massively appealed to me or came easily as a skill. I was one of the last of my friend group to have a MySpace page and almost as soon as I made it everyone moved to Facebook!Now I have a Facebook page but for years the only updates on it were as old as the account. It lingered in the background of my mind slowly but surely collecting unread messages from people who actually have my phone number. With every message that cumulated in my inbox my interest plunged a little closer to total apathy.

#riotcleanup shows the Other Side of Social Media in the London Riots
A few days after social media was being lambasted in the UK press for its role in the London riots, new media has emerged as a saint over night for its efforts in helping community groups clean up some of the damage that has been caused.Whilst this really is a case of being two sides of the same coin, there’s no doubt that sites such as Twitter and Facebook have played a significant role throughout the recent rioting. As the police continue in their efforts to keep the streets safe, good hearted citizens are offering their help with clean up operations in all of the affected areas of London using the hash tag #riotcleanup on Twitter.

Tracking Social Media in Google Analytics - New and Improved Functionality!
New functionality in Google Analytics includes the ability to track social interactions on your site and easily see data for this in the Analytics interface. The Google ‘+1′ button is automatically tracked and buttons such as ‘Tweet this’, ‘Follow us’ and ‘Like’ can be tracked alongside this by implementing some code on your site.This functionality is only visible in the new version of Google Analytics, which is now available to everyone, so I’d recommend having a look around and getting used to this interface as it has so much extra functionality. It also only works with the latest version of tracking code, known as the asynchronous code, this is the one that goes before the </head> tag.

Was Microsoft’s Purchase of Skype Really That Savvy?
As we said yesterday, something big was about to happen to rival Google+ [See: Is Bing’s Battle with Google Finally Heating Up?], and that came in the form of the Skype/Facebook deal that’s been filling column inches on blogs and articles across the globe. For Microsoft, their agreed acquisition of Skype back in May was surrounded by questions [See: Microsoft close to Buying Skype] and whilst this announcement has put their agreed acquisition into a bit of perspective, it would be too easy to say this justifies the $8.5 billion they agreed to pay.
