There are a lot of discussions around just HOW important link building is, such as, what are we going to do if/when Google changes their ranking algorithm and devalues links? Having read about the trials and tribulations faced by Scarlett Johansson in the past week, the SEO in me couldn’t help but think about the link bait of any such high profile leak. Whilst the content of the stolen imagery alone was enough to help it go viral, the frenzy it caused on Twitter (where it was in the trending charts for two days) and on the search engines prove just how simple link bait can be – even if it is ill-gotten.
Now, I’m not suggesting that the publishers of the images were thinking only of their inbound link profiles, or even that webmasters should use this as a model for future SEO efforts. Far from it in fact. However, it does perhaps demonstrate the concept of link bait better than anything else.
There are plenty of people out there who will tell you that there’s no better way to optimise your site and generate wider public interest than getting involved in a little content marketing. That’s all well and good, but without a clear idea of how to go about creating an effective strategy or indeed an understanding of what content marketing actually is, you could be doomed to failure from the start.
It’s not rocket science. But even so, there is definitely a right way and a wrong way to go about marketing your content effectively. Here is a quick guide to getting your strategy spot on.

A question I have been asked a number of times is “Why doesn’t Google show all my links?”
It’s not unnatural for people to check on how many links are being seen and counted by Google if their site is undergoing a link building campaign.
So when Google reports a much lower than expected number of links this can set the alarm bells ringing.
In a web dominated by links it is important to have a varied approach. One way to get valuable links is by leaving threads and follow-up comments with a reference back to your site. Although this may seem straightforward it is important that your threads add value to the conversation. This post will look at the best ways to get links from forums (in an ethical way). Read more
Why you shouldn’t buy links on EBay, or more appropriately why you shouldn’t buy links at all. This is a subject that constantly blights the world of SEO; buying links to benefit rankings goes against the codes of practice at Google and all other search engines, but yet it is still as prevalent as ever.
The fact that people still do it, and in such high numbers, opens the gates to people who think of the most advantageous link schemes in an attempt to make a bit of money. In this article I have included some existing schemes (including one on EBay, a particular favourite) and some others you might encounter on your journeys.

Link Building takes up quite a lot of time when optimising a site for Search Engines. Monitoring your links enables you, over time, to see which channels are bringing you the most links or the greatest level of acceptance.
A good Link Building strategy is the creation of many links from lots of different types of good quality websites as possible. Some types of websites may however take up lots of your time as they have a small acceptance rate and some may always guarantee a link which remains as long as the site stays live. Read more
